New National Standards

In recent news, the US Department of Education has released a draft of a new set of national education standards for language and mathematics.  Since then, there have been a lot of opinions as to the pros, cons, and where this will lead us.  While I like to see a general standard that doesn't tell how to teach, I worry that this will lead to yet another test, this time on a national scale.  If there is a test, and teacher accountability is tied to it, similar to how No Child Left Behind is set up, then we will see much more 'teaching to the test'.  And this test is only English and math.  This means that science, history, civics, art, music, technology, and many other important subjects could easily fall by the wayside.  And if you don't believe me, look at how many public schools are dropping art and music.
