PhD Program Profile: University of Michigan

Location:  Ann Arbor, MI
Program Name:  PhD in Psychology, concentration in Cognition and Cognitive Neuroscience
Department Name(s):  Department of Psychology
Program Goals:  to permit the student to achieve:
  • a general knowledge of the broad subject matter of psychology; 
  • mastery of a specialized field; 
  • competence in organizing, interpreting, and communicating effectively; 
  • competence in research skills and creative work; and
  • professional skills relevant to their field of specialization.
Minimum GPA:  3.5 (Average: 3.8)
GRE Scores:  (Average) Quantitative: 730, Verbal:  670, Writing:  5.3
Pros:

  • offers certificate in complex systems
  • offers certificate in cognitive science/cognitive neuroscience
  • has lab for cognitive architecture research
Cons:

  • VERY difficult to get into (see GPA and GRE scores listed above)
Thoughts:  I think I'll use this as my highest but likely unrealistic program.  Everyone should have one, just in case they are better than they think.  I'll have to take a class in experimental psychology over the next two years, but that would help me in any program.  It's really a shot in the dark, but I'm going to apply anyway.
