Learning Japanese, Five Weeks In

Five down, eighty more to go.  Yes, eighty.  I have well over a year left of this.  And you can probably expect at least 80 more posts on learning Japanese.

This past week has been mixed.  I was entering 20 kanji a day into my SRS until work picked up.  When you're working 10-12 hours days, you really don't want to do too much more.  Thankfully, I was able to make myself continue with practicing the kanji that are already in the SRS.  I've also been watching a few Stargate SG-1 episodes in Japanese.  I try to watch one a day.  Then I'll move onto House or West Wing.  I also ordered my first Japanese video game, called Clannad.  It's a very large game, entirely in Japanese, revolving around the life of a high school student.  I have the anime, so I have an idea of what's going on, but not the details.  This type of game, which many people won't care for, is where you are occasionally given choices, which determines what will happen later.  The reply value is that 1) it's a good story and 2) as you finish certain storylines, new options open up.  Also, it's basically two games in one; once you see all of the stories of the first part, the second part opens up.

On the advice of a friend, I found a Japanese grocery with a Japanese media store (books/movies/magazines) next to it just a 10-12 minute drive away.  Picked up a Japanese atlas, bilingual map, pocky sticks, and a bilingual children's book.  Finished the pocky sticks the same day.

I expect several more weeks like this, kanji-heavy, before we move on to something entirely new.

  1. Very cool, Matt. Way to go with the immersion. I love the video game idea. Never thought of that for language learning.
